TumbleBoard for iPad - my first app

5000-miles-apart:

Hi, I’m Luke. I assume most of you know me already but oh well :)

A while ago I started working on my first iPad app. I never really found a good tumblr app for my iPad, which is why I decided to start making my own free app. And now, almost a month later, it’s finally in the app store.

Pinterest is a social network, where you can pin and re-pin stuff you like. They have a really great category feature with a lot of different categories like geeky stuff, tech, design etc.

Today the app has been updated and it finally became a universal app. So now you can use Pinterest even from your iPad, which is great because of the big screen.

TumbleBoard logo evolution

For my TumbleBoard app, I wanted to create a very simple logo that would be easy to recognise, even when you put the app inside a folder. At first, I tried to use the same colors as with my app prototype. I also knew I wanted to put the reblog icon on the logo. So the first version of the logo was mainly blue/green with a reblog arrow inside it.

I watched the WWDC 2012 session on icon design, and I kinda started changing my mind about the logo. I wanted to make it look  like something from the real world, a real world example. Two things that came to my mind when I was thinking about a board was a corkboard and a chalkboard. I tried the corkboard first, which only turned out crappy.

After that I tried the chalkboard. I liked it and the logo looks great on the retina iPad. I kept refining it, changing textures and colours. So the one you see on top is what I came up with so far. I might still do some minor changes, but this should be really close to the final logo.

There’s still no good Tumblr app for the iPad, so I’m currently working on my own Tumblr app. I made a first mockup this weekend to kind of get an idea what it will look like. I decided to use two columns of posts, because you get a lot of content on the screen but you still see every post and won’t be overwhelmed.
The design is kind of inspired by the Tumblr website with the same blue colors and gradients. But as I said, it’s only a preview so far, I did it completely in Photoshop.

Infinity Blade II is a fairly simple game. You’re fighting against different types of enemies, leveling up and buying new equipment. One thing that’s special about Infinity Blade is, that you basically need to do the same thing over and over again. Siris, the character you play, is a deathless. Every time he dies, he will get reborn. With every rebirth you start over at the same place again. Every time you get to know a bit more about the story and you level up and collect money for new weapons and armor.
The whole game is really about the fights. You can swipe your finger over the screen and your character will attack. You can parry and block attacks and use magic spells and combos. Over time you will get a better feeling for the controls.
You can either us a two handed weapon, dual wield weapons or a one handed weapon with a shield. With every levelup you get new skill points. You can improve your strength for more damage, your health etc.
There is so much more to explore and discover, definitely go take a look.

You have always dreamed of flying - but your wings are tiny. Luckily the world is full of beautiful hills. Use the hills as jumps - slide down, flap your wings and fly! At least for a moment - until this annoying gravity brings you back down to earth. But the next hill is waiting for you already. Watch out for the night and fly as fast as you can.

Tiny Wings is a highly addictive game. The game itself is pretty simple: you control a bird with tiny wings so he can’t fly. But luckily, there are a lot of hills so by tapping the bird you can gain speed. You start in the morning, but you need to be fast. The night is chasing you and as soon as it catches the bird, he falls asleep.
The thing that makes the game so addictive are the challenges. There are different levels in the game. With every level, all the points you get will get multiplied by your multiplier level. This starts off at 10x and raises by 2 every time you level up.
To get to a higher level you need to do challenges. Per example collect 200 coins, or do 32 perfect slides, or even hold your iPhone / iPad upside down.
The game is now available in a new 2.0 version on the iPhone and there’s a separate version for the iPad. Definitely check it out!
